Proposition 65

In 1986, California voters approved the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act to address growing concerns about toxic chemicals in consumer products and the environment. Better known as Proposition 65, the law requires the state to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. The list must be updated once a year, and it now contains nearly 900 chemicals.

Boiler MACT

In 2004, the EPA issued a final rule to substantially reduce emissions of toxic air pollutants from industrial, commercial and institutional boilers. AHFA worked with the EPA and other stakeholders over several years to ensure that the rule, known as Boiler MACT, used a common-sense approach that exempted smaller, solid fuel, wood-fired boilers such as those used throughout most of our industry’s remaining domestic furniture factories.

Formaldehyde

On December 12, 2016, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final rule to implement the Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products Act, which added Title VI to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The purpose of this rule is to reduce consumer and worker exposure to formaldehyde from certain wood products produced domestically or imported into the United States.

PFAS

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often referred to as PFAS, are a diverse group of chemistries characterized by the strong bond between fluorine and carbon atoms. Because of this strong bond, PFAS provide products with strength, durability, stability and resilience. These properties result in the reliable and safe function of many products, including those used in medical, pharmaceutical, food packaging, aerospace and automotive applications.
